Isanti County Attorney Jeff Edblad was named the 2009 recipient of the Minnesota County Attorneys Association Johnson Distinguished Service Award at the association’s annual conference in Bloomington Dec. 2-4.
The award is named for Anoka County Attorney Robert “Bob” Johnson and presented to a county attorney who has demonstrated a history of significant leadership and whose activity has increased public awareness of the county attorney’s office.
Edblad has been a long-time, active participant in the MCAA and has been on the Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines Commission since 2003. He has been chair of the Commission since 2007.
“Jeff has been a shining example of extraordinary leadership, initiative and innovation,” said 2009 MCAA President Janelle Kendall, “and is very deserving of the highest recognition awarded by the association.”
“It is very humbling to be the recipient of this award,” said Edblad, “especially when you look at the list of past recipients and reflect on the enormous contributions they have made to the criminal justice system on the local, state and national levels.
“These individuals are all experienced and respected prosecutors who were true ministers of justice and through their work made a difference in the lives of others,” he said.
Receiving the award given in honor of Bob Johnson makes this particularly meaningful for Edblad.
“In the early morning hours of Wednesday, November 9, 1995, I was notified I had been elected to my first term as Isanti County attorney. Later that morning as I was reflecting on what would be happening next, my phone rang. On the other end was Bob Johnson, the Anoka County attorney.
“Bob went on to offer his advice and assistance to me and told me about the resources available to me through the Minnesota County Attorneys Association.
“He was the first incumbent county attorney to call me after that initial election and welcome me as a fellow county attorney. It was a gesture I greatly appreciated and have not forgotten.
“That is the reason why receiving the award from the association, named after Bob and his father Robert (former longtime Anoka County attorney), means so much to me on a personal level,” he concluded.
