By Evelyn Puffer Contributing writer Steven Dion Kellum, 42, of Grasston is recovering at Hennepin County Medical Center after being shot by a Minneapolis Police officer Dec. 4 as he drove at them in a stolen car. The stolen 2007 BMW was parked in the driveway of former WCCO news anchor Jeanette Trompeter about 5 p.m. that night as she was loading items into it for a going away party. Kellum, who is also known as Dion Steven Blencoe, drove the stolen BMW to Burger Jones restaurant where 20 minutes later police received a call that a man had ordered several alcoholic drinks, refused to pay for them, and then driven away in a vehicle matching the BMW’s description. As an employee of the restaurant on West Lake St. attempted to stop him from leaving, Kellum slammed the car door on his hand. Police tracked the car via its GPS system and attempted to pull it over on Cedar Lake Road just after 6 p.m. Kellum initially complied with officer orders to pull over but then drove directly at Officer Gretchen Bloss who was standing between two vehicles. Officers then opened fire at Kellum who crashed the car into a tree. He was initially listed in critical condition at HCMC but has since been upgraded. He has been charged in Hennepin Co. with felony second degree assault and theft of a motor vehicle. Kellum has a lengthy criminal record including felony convictions for coercion, robbery, aiding and abetting robbery, theft of a motor vehicle and attempted theft of a motor vehicle. The 2003 attempted theft of a vehicle charge drew a 13-month sentence at Minnesota Correctional Facility at St. Cloud. Kellum was convicted in Anoka Co. November 30, 2009 for misdemeanor pawning the property of another and sentenced to 90 days which he had already served awaiting sentencing. |
