By Jon Tatting jon.tatting@ecm-inc.com The Isanti County Board on Dec. 1 assigned its highway engineer to meet with Minnesota Department of Transportation officials on proceeding with the Hwy. 65/107 improvement project north of Cambridge to Braham. The issue came to light when Commissioner Larry Southerland asked county highway engineer Richard Heilman for an update on the proposed project, designed to expand Hwy. 65 to four lanes from the northern end of the bypass to Braham with an overpass at Hwy. 107. Commissioner George Larson, whose district is also impacted by the project, said he would be interested in joining Southerland and Heilman in talks, too, with either MnDOT regional official Dave Schwarting or Jim Povich, the department’s head planner. When initially asked about the plan, Heilman said the county needs to make an appropriation request to Congressman Jim Oberstar. It also means much legwork from the county, he added, as well as gaining input on funding and overall plans from MnDOT. Heilman affirmed the project is in the state’s plan, but resources are not being exhausted on it now. Commissioners agreed it’s time to “start the process.” In other action, the board... • approved an application for an exempt permit request by the Princeton Lions for a raffle on Green Lake. • approved an Isanti County budget amendments policy as well as amendments to the county Personnel Policy. • approved a request by the Long Lake Improvement Association for an exempt permit for raffle scheduled for February 10, 2010. • approved membership on the Metropolitan Emergency Services Board, effective Jan. 1. Sheriff Russ Monson noted the county now qualifies with 800 megahertz for membership again. He noted participation will benefit the county by keeping updated on emergency 9-1-1 systems, issues. • obliged Transit Director Jackie Forner’s request to adjust the fare rate from $2 to $3.50 for ridership aboard the Chisago-Isanti County Heartland Express bus service. The adjustment, which only affects passengers who are transferring from one bus to another, is effective Jan. 1. • approved a utility permit requested by Don Fiedler Companies, for a buried drain tile across County Hwy. 4, a mile and a half east of Hwy. 65. • approved a utility permit requested by Qwest Communications, for a buried communication cable along Co. Hwy. 36, from Co. Rd. 34 to 606 feet south. • waived the building permit fee for construction of a handicap accessible ramp at a home in Bradford Township. • received an update from highway engineer Heilman on the Cambridge-Isanti Bike/Walk Trail, scheduled to connect the cities alongside the BNSF railroad tracks on the west of side Hwy. 96. Though concern remains over the elevated walkway, atop several feet of wetland, the long-anticipated trail may open to the public next year. • learned a total of 743 doses of the H1N1 vaccination were recently administered at local schools and the public health office, reported PH Director Kathy Minkler. While priority groups have been targeted, the entire population is scheduled in phase 3 sometime next year. |
