The 2009 Summer Youth Work Readiness Program at Braham was a “lot of work,” but it was a community-wide success, reported teacher Jane Johnston at the Nov. 16 regular school board meeting.

Twenty-four students participated in the program, funded by $22,257 through Central Minnesota Jobs and Training Services. Nineteen of the students earned a .5 or 1.0 credit for their participation while earning wages bases on hours of attendance and job performance. A total of 222 unpaid volunteer hours were also served through the program.

“We made it through with very few rain dates, completing both outside and indoors projects around town,” said Johnston.

 Students were involved in a variety of jobs, including:

• Developing and ex-panding the community BMX bike trail;

• Providing enrichment activities for children ages 4-12 twice weekly;

• Assisting the Braham Community Garden Club, Braham Park Board, Braham businesses and the schools with maintenance projects;

• Providing social activities for the elderly at the Braham Community Center and assisting with Pie Day activities.

“We don’t know the funding possibilities for a similar program for 2010, but hopefully we are notified early in the year for organizational purposes,” said Johnston.

Johnston also presented two $1,000 grants to the board at the meeting. The first is an East Central Arts Council grant for creative writing and book publishing for 8th graders with Pine City author Michael Willett. The second is a Walmart grant for a prescriptive learning system for 1st-12th grade skill levels.

New board member Ceaglske introduction

Tammy Ceaglske, elected to the board on Nov. 3, introduced herself to the meeting audience Monday night. In 2010, she will replace George Carlson who chose not to run again for his seat.

Ceaglske is a 28-year resident of Braham, graduating from BHS in 1989. She is a part-time social worker at Isanti Primary School. She and husband Braham Mayor Ken Ceaglske have two children in Grades 2 and 4 at Braham Elementary.

“I love kids. I have an increasing interest in education and everything that goes with it,” said Ceaglske. “I’m happy to be able to work with the board.”

Vaccination clinic at Braham Elementary

Supt. Greg Winter said Isanti County Public Health will hold an H1N1 vaccination clinic for the district’s K-2 students (including home-schooled students) from 3-6 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 23. Letters have been sent to the students’ homes explaining the clinic.

Walker announces teaching retirement

Janelle Walker, who has taught Phy Ed in the district for 24 1/2 years, announced her retirement which goes into effect Jan. 25, 2010. The board remarked Walker has done an outstanding job in the Phy Ed department during her tenure. BHS Principal Roger Jansen reported two applicants have already applied for the position.

In other action, the board:

• Heard parent-teacher conferences were well-attended at both BES and BHS Nov. 12.

• Heard in Supt. Winter’s report he attended East Central Energy’s  “Future of Lighting” focussed on cost-saving.

Next meeting: Monday, Dec. 21, 7 p.m.
