TODAY'S PATRIOTS

By Tylinn Fahrni

The meaning of the word "patriot" can be broken down into definitions and titles, but the true meaning of the word is represented by action. "Patriot" to me means anyone who is willing to preserve our country as it was meant to be. People in the judicial branch of the government envision this for me. A patriot is also someone who loves his or her country, meaning its people. Those who volunteer their time and resources are patriots to me. One mustn't forget those who put their country before their very lives. Soldiers are another exceptional example of a patriot.

The purpose of judges and others working in the courts is to preserve the rights and freedoms of the public, the country itself. I think this is very patriotic because if you weren't patriotic, you wouldn't have the ideals necessary to making decisions for others. They have to listen to the complaints of the population and compare their situation to the laws and rights of the Constitution. They need ideals and morals to pass judgment on the people counting on them to make the right choice.

Volunteers are also patriots. Most people have other ways to spend their time to make their own lives easier, but volunteers put love of their country on the whole before the opportunity to help themselves their sense of duty lead them to the noble pursuit of making others better able to do things for themselves.

The definition of the word "soldier" is "one who serves in an army or other military service." One who serves is a person who provides freedom for one's own country and for other places willingly. These qualities keep our world together. It gives the government the ability to do things that they couldn't or wouldn't dare to if they didn't have a strong military. They put the safety of their country and the people they love before their very lives. A solder is the ultimate patriot to me.

Your definition of the word "patriot" has nothing to do with what it means to me. You can use your own defining traits to make a patriot of yourself. All of these positions are obtainable and that means that you can be a patriot too. Whether you have the brains for law, the compassion of a volunteer, or the courage of a soldier, you can be a patriot.
